Jewish “Dating” and church theology

When you come to John 14, we need to remember that Jesus was a Jew, inside a Jewish culture, speaking to a predominately Jewish audience. That being said, what are some things we can learn about our theology in light of Christ’s reference to Jewish “Dating” Traditions and the disciples in John 14:2-3…

The Match (Shiddukhin)
The father of the groom approves the brideThe bride consents to marriage
-God the Father approves, even sends His Son to a death that will make the “marriage” to His bride possible. When someone consents to the gift of grace they are consenting to become the bride of Christ and immediately become part of the church

The Bride Price (Mohar)
The price was required by law
-The justice of the law required our sin to be dealt with (Rom. 8:3-4)
Paid by the father of the groom according to the value of the bride
-The Father gave His Son’s life as the required free gift to pay our ransom for sin

The Love Gift (Mattan)
An un-required gift from the groom to his bride
-Christ gives us eternal life, the peace of God, and prayer that we might bring our requests to Him

The Dowry (Shiluhim)
A gift from the father of the bride, addressing needs in her new life apart from him
-In John fourteen Jesus asks His Father to send two gifts to His Bride…although this falls outside of the traditional norm the Bible teaches when we are born into this world we are born chiildren of the god of this world. That god, Satan, has nothing that he can give for our benefit, and nothing he intends to give for our benefit.
-The two gifts given in John fourteen: The future sending of the Comforter (Holy Spirit/Acts 2) and the peace of God.

The Marriage Contract (Ketubah)
Document stating the rights of the bride and the promises of the groom
-Our marriage contact is the New Testament, teaching who we are in Christ and giving the promises upon which our faith is built

The Betrothal (Kiddushin)
Both the groom and the bride drink the cup of acceptance (covenant)
Groom goes to father’s home and builds structure for new wife
-Christ promises that He has gone to prepare a place for us in His father’s house (John 14:2-3)
While gone the bride exhibits her commitment in apparel and action
-The church is to be faithful in completing the work Christ left us to do, clothed in His righteousness
The return date of the groom is known only by the father who must approve the structure and the departure date
-Only God the Father knows when the return of the Son will be (Mark 13:32)

The Nuptials (Nissuin)
When given an approval the groom comes for his bride proceeded by a shouting wedding party
-Proceeded by the trump of God and shout of the archangel Christ returns for His bride (1Thess. 4:16-17)
“Distracted” by the shouted the father of the bride looks away…the groom steals away the bride
Returning to the new home, they consummate the marriage and party like rock stars for 7 days
-Following the Rapture, on earth the tribulation will take place, in heaven the church will be judged, and the Marriage Supper will take place (Rev 19:6-9)
